FAQS/Additional Info

Where Should I Stay?

Our studio is located 10 minutes West of NW Gainesville, Florida. Gainesville has an array of excellent hotels, and Airbnb rentals. The closest accommodations to the studio is the Best Western Gateway Grand off NW 39th Avenue. There are also several nice hotels at the Newberry Road and Archer Road exits off I-75.

Do I Need To Be Able To Swim?

While all our training will be conducted in a pool you absolutely need to be able to swim. Due to the nature and inherent dangers of underwater photography you need to be able to confidently swim in the event of emergencies especially when working with clients.

What Should I Bring?

We recommend you bring the following: towels, trash bags, underwater masks, swimsuits, dry clothes, any necessary medications, SD memory cards, notepads and pens, any underwater gear you already have, and a super fun attitude!

What Airport Should I Fly Into?

Gainesville Regional Airport has direct flights from Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, and Dallas. The airport is across town about 25 minutes from the studio. There are several major airports that are also an option. Jacksonville is 1.5 hours away, and Orlando and Tampa are both 2 hours away.

What Experience Is Required?

Having knowledge of basic portrait photography and the workings and setting of camera is important to being able to capture image in an underwater environment. You do not need any experience shoot underwater but you should be comfortable in-water enough to manipulate gear while underwater.

Where Is The Workshop Being Held?

The Water Workshop will be held at Water Bear Studios located at 330 NW 170th St. Newberry, Florida. The studio is 10 minutes West of I-75 on the West side of Gainesville, Florida.

Happy Saturday! Julie, Will Greenwood, and I have been working on an ad campaign for the Florida Springs Council all week and I thought I’d share this BTS clip by our friend, Jayden. I love how it shows just how much Jules is able to multitask! Her eyes are glued on our model, she’s holding down the skirt for the shot, she has one hand on the buoy, and she’s stabilizing my shoulder simultaneously. Grateful for my amazing team! Also, only 2 spots left for the workshop! Trust me, you’ll be sad to miss out when you see the dress I just ordered for it. waterbearphotography.com/underwater-workshopsModel: Sarah MarieBTS: Jayden FreedmanSafety: Jules ❤️ See MoreSee Less

So stoked to share this incredible client session. My client was so cooperative, she was a great swimmer and was so comfortable in front of the camera! Sent my seafrogs and Sony on their maiden voyage to capture these stunning portraits for this somewhat intimidating mermaid. 🧜‍♀️ I know I know, she’s not your typical mermaid. But who here is body shaming this hot mama ?!? 🦈 (I just came home from vacation on St Croix and a week of diving, first time taking my portraiture underwater. Can you tell I’m having fun? I’m so excited to more more into what you amazing photoGs do with human clients!)For real, any tips and tricks for underwater editing to restore color and eliminate the aggressive BLUE, much appreciated. I know it’s less of an issue with human clients cuz they’re at the surface, but on a cloudy day even THAT loses color. Taken at 102 ft with Sony a7iii and seafrogs housing. See MoreSee Less

I know you’re probably sick of me talking about it, but we have just a few seats left for our only workshop of 2023! If it books out (all 8 seats), I’ll create a FREE video on how I color-grade an underwater image for attendees (and maybe offer it at a discount to this group). waterbearphotography.com/underwater-workshopsModeled by Astrid Kallsen See MoreSee Less

waterbearphotography.com/underwater-workshops/Hey @everyone! A few things- we’ve made the tough decision that the May workshop is likely our last one for the foreseeable future. So if you’ve wanted to come to one and keep telling yourself, "next year", I would encourage you to not wait. Our schedule is simply getting too busy and I want to make sure that I’m giving each project, whether it’s work or workshop, the time and attention it deserves. I LOVE hosting workshops, but they take a ton out of me and my team to do them well. We’ll still be offering private mentorships, but they’ll also be on a more limited basis.Second, if you’re a member of Summerana, we have a discount code for the workshop available to their members. Additionally, we’ll be their featured photographer of the month for April and will be releasing new tutorials on that platform!Third, please use this group as a place to share work and ask questions! I get a lot of private messages and struggle to keep up with them. This is a great group with TONS of experienced photographers in it, so if I don’t always respond right away, chances are that someone else here will. Let’s all grow together! It can be tough when you work with clients who only feel comfortable in one or two poses. If that’s the case, here are some simple ways to create different looking images. Often I’ll do some split shots- clients love them and they look impressive. Next, I’ll have my safety create interesting shapes with the clothing. I love the "octopus crawling over the reef" feel with the second image here. Last, I’ll move around the client to create different angles, and thus an image that feels different. Any other go to tips and tricks to create unique and saleable images? I hope this was helpful! See MoreSee Less
